Updated November 2026. Tabarca in winter is a different island: no summer day-trippers, an almost empty village and often a calm sea. But it takes more planning, because boats run very little between November and January and many restaurants close. Here is what you need to know before you go.
Are there boats to Tabarca in winter?
- From Santa Pola, the regular service ends on 31 October. Between November and January departures are very limited or on demand only. Transtabarca says it will resume its regular service on 1 February 2027.
- Call before you go (Transtabarca: +34 965 09 44 76) and ask about the return time too: with few departures, missing the boat back is the main risk.
- From Alicante, Cruceros Kontiki operates mainly in season; in winter, check directly with the company.
- Sailings are cancelled in strong wind or swell. In winter, check the forecast the day before and call again in the morning.
Timetables, prices and parking are in our Santa Pola boat guide.
What the weather is like
| Month | Air temperature (approx.) | Water temperature (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| November | 13–21 °C | 18–19 °C |
| December | 9–18 °C | 15–16 °C |
| January | 7–17 °C | 14 °C |
| February | 8–18 °C | 13–14 °C |
These are average values for this part of the Alicante coast: sunny days are common, but there is hardly any shade or shelter from the wind on the island. Bring a windproof jacket even if it is sunny.
Things to do on Tabarca in winter
- Walk the walled town without crowds: the Puerta de Levante (or San Rafael), the 18th-century Church of San Pedro y San Pablo and the walls. The island is about 1,800 metres long and 400 metres wide, so it is easy to explore on foot.
- Visit the Nueva Tabarca Museum, in the old almadraba warehouse. Winter hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 11:00–14:00 and 15:30–16:30, and entry is free. Call ahead on +34 965 960 175. More in our museum guide.
- Walk to the lighthouse and the San José Tower, outside the walls, in the low winter light.
- Photography and birdwatching: without swimmers, sunsets and the rocky coast look even better.
Where to eat and sleep
In winter many restaurants close on weekdays or for holidays. If you want to try the local caldero, call to book and bring water and some food just in case. There are several places to stay on the island, such as Hotel Boutique Isla de Tabarca and the Casa del Gobernador; check whether they are open on your dates. Tips for a winter visit
- Confirm the outbound and return boats on the day of your visit.
- Swimming is only for the brave: the water is around 14–16 °C.
- For New Year’s Eve or Valentine’s Day, book well in advance: places are limited.
Summary: in winter Tabarca is quiet and authentic, but there are few boats and many businesses are closed. Call the ferry company and the restaurant before you go and bring warm clothes.
