It is inside the walled town, in the old almadraba (tuna-fishing) warehouse, next to the main beach and a few steps from the harbour. They may change on public holidays or during works: call ahead, especially in winter, when there are also few boats.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-you-will-see\"><\/span>What you will see<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The founding of Nueva Tabarca:<\/strong> how Charles III had the island fortified in 1770 and settled it with families of Genoese origin rescued in Algiers, who had previously lived on the Tunisian island of Tabarka.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The almadraba and fishing:<\/strong> the building itself was the almadraba warehouse, the tuna-fishing method that was for decades one of the island\u2019s main livelihoods.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Underwater archaeology:<\/strong> objects recovered from the seabed nearby; the MARQ (Alicante Archaeological Museum) gave the museum a Roman anchor stock.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The marine reserve:<\/strong> why Tabarca became Spain\u2019s first marine reserve in 1986 and which species it protects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"other-sights-nearby\"><\/span>Other sights nearby<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Church of San Pedro y San Pablo<\/strong>, 18th century, inside the walls.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Puerta de Levante<\/strong> (or San Rafael) and the rest of the walls.<\/li>\n<li><strong>San Jos\u00e9 Tower<\/strong>, outside the walls: a state prison in the 19th century.
